The crash took place around 2:27 p.m., Monday, Dec. 14, on Flanders Road in Southampton, said Lt. Susan Ralph of the Southampton Police.

Responding patrol units found two vehicles involved in a head-on crash and rendered aid to Edward Sorensen, 77, and Gearlyn O’Brien, 57, both of Southampton, and Jamel Mercer, 25, of Riverhead, police said.

According to Ralph, Sorensen was driving a 2016 Subaru westbound with O’Brien, when he collided with Mercer, who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala eastbound.

Mercer apparently crossed over into Sorensen’s lane of travel striking the Subaru, Ralph said.

Sorensen and O’Brien were transported to Southampton Hospital and Mercer was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Southampton Police were assisted by the Southampton ambulance and fire departments along with Hampton Bays Ambulance and New York State Police.

Southampton Town detectives are continuing the investigation into the collision.
